Having already made sure of promotion to Middlesex Merit Tables Premier Division, Ealing Trailfinders 1871 2nd XV made the short journey to the attractive ground of West London in Greenford in their final league game, which also counted as the quarter-final of the North West Middlesex Cup. Following promotion to MMT1, West London have proven to be one of the stronger teams in the division and asked plenty of questions of Ealing before eventually running out of steam.
On a bright and warm spring day, Ealing started strongly and took the lead after 9 minutes through prop Kimani Goppy, with captain Harrison Slater adding the extras. Further tries followed from centre Ilan Trowbridge and second row Keatan Gill to produce a healthy 19-0 lead, before West London fought back to reduce the deficit to 19012 at the interval.
Gill added his second of the day soon after the restart, converted by Alex Tarrant with Slater having left the field with a leg injury. As Ealing began to assert their superior organisation and fitness, two final tries followed from second row David Vater and wing Alex Tarrant, who finished the day with a try and three conversions.
Joint man of the match were 18-year-old scrum half Chinh Patterson and Kavan Fitzpatrick, who made a vital contribution to the lineout and loose play despite feeling unwell.
1871 2nds progress to the semifinal of the NW Middlesex Club, where they will play local rivals Old Priorians, hoping to then move on to the final for their final game of a highly successful season.
