In new kit sponsored by Stanlo Construction Ltd, Ealing Trailfinders 1871 put on a sparkling display of running rugby against visitors Welwyn with six tries in the first 32 minutes and a total of ten to pass the 50 mark for the second week in a row.
Captained by Gereint Price in the absence of team captain Lewis Steadman, vice-captain Toby Holt and usual stand-in captain Harry Vidler, Ealing showed attacking intent from the kick-off and after a clean catch at a penalty line-out and a couple of pick-and-goes eventually found a gap in the defence, with flanker Ben Thompson popping up in the line. Four minutes later outside centre Keir Gordon took the ball at pace and side-stepped his way over wide out on the left. Just 3 minutes later hooker Luke Parry was on hand to seize on a loose ball from a thumping Ealing tackle on the left wing and touch down. Welwyn responded immediately with a converted try, but 1871 added a fourth score to secure the bonus point with only a quarter of the game gone with a fine move finished by Pat Yeates, on league debut, wide out on the right wing. A fifth score by full back Kyle Beck creating an overlap on the left wing effectively ended the contest with a conversion by fly half Harrison Slater, although there was time for one more try before the break with Yeates put into space for his second of the day following powerful work by the pack. With a second Slater conversion, Ealing were comfortably placed at 34-7 going into the break.
Despite continued Ealing dominance after the re-start, Welwyn reduced the arrears with a well-worked try, but with a quarter of the game remaining a kick out of defence by the visitors was collected in space, and slick passing created a try for Gordon wide on the left, finished with another side step. Parry burst away from the side of a maul for his second of the day, and inside centre Ryan Conyard showed a good turn of speed to finish close to the posts. In the final play of the game an outstanding period of attacking rugby by both forwards and backs culminated in a try by second row Reggie Elliot-Jones.
In a clinical display by 1871, man of the match, despite unusually not being on the score sheet himself, was Josh Steadman, with strong performances by Gordon, Thompson, Parry and Price. Coach Phil Smith was pleased with the detailed work done and commitment shown in training, and highlighted the depth of the squad, with a few players out of position. No fewer than 32 players have already appeared in the first four games, which have yield three wins.
After a rest week, Ealing have an away trip to Hackney on 12 October before a crunch game against league leaders Brunel University, who they were promoted with last season.
