A hat-trick of tries by No 8 at the base of a dominant scrum and a brace from inside centre Darragh Sinnott, along with tries by five other scorers, aided by a near-perfect nine conversions out of ten from the boot of fly half Harry Vidler, saw Ealing Trailfinders 1871 maintain their position as the top points scorers in the division, having amassed 569 in 12 games played.

In a game scheduled to be played at Royston, but switched to Vallis Way due to a cry-off by the Hertfordshire side earlier in the season, 1871 looked dangerous in the early exchanges, particularly in the set scrums, but failed to turn pressure into points, and against the run of play it was the visitors who opened the scoring when a potential scoring pass was intercepted, although the conversion was missed. Two minutes later, Ealing responded with a pushover try touched down by Day, and just a minute later the lead was stretched to 14-5 when left wing Josh Steadman collected a well-directed cross-field kick by scrum half Harrison Slater and popped the ball to outside centre Max Muirhead. With a quarter of the game gone, Ealing knocked on in an attacking position, but won the ensuing scrum against the head and Sinnott broke through the defence to touch down between the posts. The four-try bonus was achieved within the first half hour with a barnstorming run by hooker Tim Hitchcock. With the break approaching, 1871 opted for an attacking scrum when the visitors were penalised for hands on the floor, and with the Royston pack unable to withstand the powerful scrummaging of the Ealing front row of Dan O’Mahony, Tim Hitchcock and Laurence Troke and second row of Matt Donnelly and Reggie Elliott-Jones, Day touched down to make the score at the interval 35-5.

With the second half 4 minutes old, the Steadman brothers Lewis and Josh came close to engineering a try but the ball went to ground. However, soon afterwards Royston were penalised, and Vidler took a quick tap and released Sinnott, who went in under the posts. A powerful run by full back Lewis Steadman put his brother Josh into space, and after releasing Muirhead, Josh Steadman was on hand to finish off in the left-hand corner, from where Vidler converted once again. With three-quarters of the 80 minutes gone, Matt ‘He’s Just a Physio’ Knights, on for Josh Steadman on the left wing, produced a fine finish to extend the score beyond 50. A quiet period of play followed, with much of the action taking place in the Ealing half, but turnover ball was eventually worked to captain Lewis Steadman, who sprinted to the line. There was just time for one final score, with Day once again turning dominant scrummaging into points. For the first time on the day, Vidler missed to add the extras.

1871 have an away fixture at St Albans on 14 January, followed by a home clash with Hendon, before the all-important return fixtures against London Scottish Lions and Saracens Amateurs.
