A re-arranged away game against the team immediately below them in the league and with top try scorer Josh Steadman sidelined with a hamstring injury suggested potential for a close result. However, a magnificent 80 minutes of unrelenting power by the forwards, led by Toby Holt putting on his best raging ball impression, allied with superb passing and handling by the backs and metronomic kicking of conversions by Harry Vidler produced an exceptional return of 103 points against an Old Streetonians side who, despite the massive gap, never gave up the battle.

Ealing made their attacking intentions clear from the kick-off, and the pressure told after 9 minutes with captain Lewis Steadman dummying for a simple run to the line. Vidler converted, as he would go on to do on no fewer than 14 out of 15 occasions. Soon afterwards the Old Street back line over-committed, leaving a space that inside centre Ryan Conyard duly exploited. From one of many powerful and well-controlled scrums the ball was then swung right, Jack Hobbs came close, and flanker Gereint Price timed his run well to receive a short scoring pass from scrum half Richard Rhydderch-Roberts.  A note of caution was introduced when Old Street mounted an attack from line-out ball close to the 1871 line and with the Ealing forwards slow to react after conceding a penalty used the gaping hole to reduce the deficit. It took another 8 minutes, on a sunny but cold day on the Hackney Marshes, for the visitors to return to their scoring ways, despite being pinned back in their own 22 after losing their own lineout ball. Lewis Steadman seized on a dropped pass and sped to the line unopposed from 70 metres for his second of the day. Next came what was very much a forwards’ try, with a lineout won by Kavan Fitzpatrick driven inexorably to the line, where tight-head prop Pat Nash was the man in possession of the ball beneath a pile of bodies. The half ended with Hobbs put into space on the right wing from further quality lineout possession to leave the half-time score at a healthy 42-5.

The contest was effectively already over, but if the home side felt they could make inroads into the lead after the break they were soon disabused of that notion. Steadman caught the kick-off and passed to Louis Aitcheson outside him on the left wing. A strong run and perfectly timed pass sent substitute full-back Kyle Beck sprinting to finish under the posts. A scrum that like many others took play 10 metres downfield put Steadman into space, the ball was quickly recycled when he was hauled down on the opposition 22 and hooker Luke Parry was on hand to finish well. Next came a superb driven lineout, with prop Tim Hitchcock adding his name to the scoresheet. Excellent timing of passes produced a second try for Hobbs, before Flynn Ward scored his first try following his return from long-term injury and Aitcheson-Walker added a brace, the second concluded with a celebratory dive. The final 13 minutes saw Conyard become the fourth player to complete a brace, before the three-figure barrier was finally crossed by Steadman turning his own into a hat-trick, put into space by a short pass from Vidler and finishing unopposed.

Man of the match awarded by a happy coach was Holt, who in the true sense of the phrase led from the front. After suffering defeat at the hands of a high-quality Brunel University side a week earlier, a top all-round performance against a team in the top half of the table marked an impressive return to form. Next up is a home fixture against bottom club Datchworth, who despite their lowly position gave 1871 a stern test on a sticky, sloping pitch earlier in the season.
