Ealing Cougars recorded another great result by doing the double over local rivals and top of the table team London Welsh Occies.
In a fiercely contested game the forward battle would be decisive and it was the Cougars that took the early momentum by dominating the scrum area and causing Occies problems. After a turnover scrum the Cougars fed the ball to fly half Ash Gillard who turned the opposition defence with a deft chip kick which he gathered himself and fed wing Luke Woodhouse to power his was in for the first score. A couple of minutes later the Cougars scored again off the back of great work from the forwards the Cougars secured the ball and hit Eoghan O'Sullivan on a blind run and was able to feed Alex Hazell who stepped two players before going over under the posts.
Ealing threatened to run away with the game but Occies showed great tenacity and strength to force their way back into the game. Several moments of intense pressure by the Occies led to the Cougars trying to play on the back foot and popping a ball up to Occies no. 8 ( their best player in both games) who raced in to score in the corner.
The Cougars replied with a try before the break from Eoghan O'Sullivan typically bulldozing over for a try close in after another good spell by the forwards.
in the 2nd half Occies stepped up the game put the Cougars under immense pressure resulting in them giving away 3 penalties that were duly converted. The Cougars struggled to cope with the Occies ability to slow down possession in the 2nd half and it wasn't until late on they stretched their lead with a try from Christian Corrigan who put in a man of the match display. Occies tried to clear their lines but didn't find touch. Christian fielded the ball and showed tremendous skill and stepping two players before outpacing the defence to score in the corner. The next try came from another good Cougars scrum putting Occies under pressure the Opposition scrum half was slow to pick the ball up and was pounced on by Nathan Brady who stole the ball and showed great composure to step and feed Federico Salcedo for a simple try under the posts.
This makes it 6 wins on the trot for the Cougars who are beginning to show some of the form that saw them win Merit table 2 last season in such great style.
